The International Organization for Standardization was founded to promote the development of international manufacturing, trade, and communication standards. The organization is composed of member bodies from more than 110 countries. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is the United States representative to ISO.
ISO standards exist for all industries except those related to electrical and electronic engineering. All ISO standards are voluntary. However, countries and industries often adopt ISO standards as requirements for doing business, thereby making them virtually mandatory in these cases.
